Q. How fit do I have to be before I start training in Tae kwon do?
Most people can start whatever their level of fitness. The physical fitness demands start relatively low but progressively increase as you learn. (If you have not exercised for a long time, or have any pre-existing medical conditions it is advisable to consult with your physician before indulging in Tae kwon do or any other type of exercise).
Q. Am I going to be hit and hurt?
Possible but unlikely. All our sparring is carried out in a controlled and safe environment in under strict supervision, and when we are free-sparring, safety equipment is used to minimise the risk.
Q. Will everyone be watching and laughing at my first attempts?
No. Beginners train at the back of the class where they can see what the instructor and more senior grades are doing, plus we all had to start somewhere so students are sympathetic not mocking.
Q. Do you take part in competitions?
Yes. We usually participate in the Scottish and the British championships, but competing is optional. Black belt grades can put themselves forward for the Scottish national squad to compete in European and World championships. One of our Scottish ladies is current and several times over World and European champion.
Q. Am I too old to start?
Unlikely, UKTF has some black belt instructors who are many years beyond retirement age and did not start until they were well into their 60s.
Q. Am I too young to start?
Lochgelly Tae kwon do currently accepts students from the ages of 8 upwards, but if you are younger you should register your interest by sending an email, as we are considering a “little ninjas” class for kids from 5 years old.
Q. What benefits will I (or my child) get from Tae kwon do?
Flexibility, co-ordination, aerobic fitness, agility, self confidence, self discipline, improved muscle tone and weight loss, higher energy levels, improved posture, a sense of achievement and of course the ability to defend yourself effectively.
Q. Why Lochgelly Tae kwon do, there are other schools around?
We offer classes twice a week all year round with high quality, professional instruction. Robert is an instructor who gets great pleasure from seeing students improve and states that his goal is helping students to become even better than he is.
